Tackling the skill shortage in South Westphalia: The InnoVEtion57 project
South Westphalia, the third strongest economic region in Germany, is at a crossroads. While the region boasts a thriving industrial landscape, it faces an urgent challenge: a shortage of skilled workers. This problem is exacerbated by the rapid pace of digital transformation, which is reshaping industries such as mechanical engineering, information technology and electrical engineering.
To remain competitive, innovative approaches to vocational training are more important than ever. Integrating digital technologies into training programmes has become essential to prepare the next generation of skilled workers to meet the demands of a modern, technology-driven industry.
Addressing this challenge head-on is the project InnoVEtion57. The initiative aims to revolutionise vocational training in South Westphalia, making it more attractive, future-oriented and aligned with the realities of digital transformation. By equipping apprentices and professionals with the skills they need for the digital age, the project aims to alleviate the regional skills shortage while driving long-term economic growth.
A digital base in vocational education
At the heart of InnoVEtion57 is the development of flexible training modules tailored to the evolving needs of learners and industries. These modules use cutting-edge technologies such as Augmented Reality (AR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to integrate seamlessly with production processes. By emphasising interactive, hands-on learning, the modules ensure that participants gain practical experience while remaining engaged.
Key components of the project include
- Digital mentoring systems
Learners will benefit from digital platforms and virtual communities that bridge the gap between theory and practice, ensuring seamless application of new knowledge in real-world scenarios. - Industry collaboration
Close collaboration with local businesses and educational institutions will ensure that training modules address real skills gaps and keep the curriculum relevant to industry. - Diversity and inclusion
The project actively seeks to integrate under-represented groups, including migrants and women, into technical careers, promoting a more inclusive workforce.
Strengthening the future of the region
InnoVEtion57 isn’t just about education – it’s about driving economic growth in South Westphalia. By focusing on innovation and digital transformation, the project is creating a sustainable pipeline of skilled workers ready to meet the demands of modern industry. In doing so, it is securing the region’s position as a competitive industrial hub well into the future.
This forward-looking initiative is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and supported by the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BiBB).
